The central meeting place for Connections residents is located in the main tower. This tower consists of a number of game tables, vending machines, community kitchen, social and study lounges and the Coordinator of Student Development’s office. The community’s information desk is also located in this tower, and it’s staffed with friendly Connections residents who answer University and community questions and provide resources. This tower houses the mailboxes for Yosemite residents.

Community Staff

Yosemite community and staff are led by Katie Knoll, Coordinator of Student Development. Katie is a full-time, Masters Degree level, live-in professional who runs the day-to-day operations of Yosemite, supervises the Resident Advisors and information desk staff, community programming, and student conduct. Katie comes to Cal Poly with a wealth of knowledge about students’ overall academic, career and social needs. Katie’s office is located on the second floor of the main tower lobby.

Connections student staff are among the best student leaders Cal Poly has to offer. There are ten Resident Advisors for the Yosemite community, one student leader per tower. The Resident Advisors live in each tower and are available to help residents with concerns, issues and help smooth their residents’ transition into living away from home.

Involvement within Yosemite

Yosemite Council

The Yosemite Hall Council provides a forum where residents can express ideas and concerns about their community and make a positive change in their daily living. Leaders gain practical experience in organizing and communicating through planning activities such as dances, coffee houses, intramural sports teams, and community service projects. Hall Councils work with hall staff to create fun and educational environments in the halls.

  • The Yosemite Hall Council meets weekly with their advisor, the Coordinator of Student Development (CSD), and a Resident Advisor who assists each group with programming, leadership training and in-hall projects throughout the year.
  • Elections for Hall Council positions are held in Yosemite early Fall Quarter for the academic year. All residents who live in the community are eligible to run for these positions and are eligible to vote. Contact the Katie or check your front desk if interested in getting involved.

For information on upcoming events, community announcements, pictures of community activities, student leader contacts, elections and Inter-Housing Council visit the IHC webpage: (http://ihc.calpoly.edu).

General information, Connections programming information, and information about other on-campus events are distributed throughout Yosemite via bulletin boards located on each floor, Resident Advisor meetings, social events, Yosemite’s Facebook profile, weekly emails and community newsletters.

Other involvement opportunities include:

Service to the Community

Another aspect of University Housing is the commitment to community service. Yosemite is partnered with the San Luis Obispo Housing Authority. Each year Yosemite residents have the opportunity to participate in the AIDS Support Network’s Walk for Life, United Blood Services blood donations, meal sign-offs through the Skip-a-Meal program, food, clothing and holiday drives and various other community service projects.

Residents interested in becoming more involved in community service may join the EnRICH committee within Yosemite Hall Council. This group of students meet bi-weekly to discuss upcoming community service projects and plan larger, University Housing community service events.

Sustainability in our Communities

University Housing is dedicated to preserving the environment by facilitating an ongoing recycling program in each residence hall. We provide education on recycling as well as environmental preservation by enabling students to become ecologically responsible individuals through the use of programming and practices.

Residents who are passionate about the environment have the opportunity to get involved with the Eco Rep committee through Yosemite Hall Council. The Eco Rep committee plans programs that bring environmental awareness and education to the rest of the University Housing community.

Becoming an Ally in the Cal Poly Community

As leaders in the 21st Century, we must learn to celebrate differences among us and to develop skills that allow us to live and learn together. The University Housing experience provides students with opportunities to celebrate who they are and to be educated about others.
